Art Chester`s The Jeep

The Flight-8 Model: “Racing is in!” The idea of building Golden Age racing models appeals to an ever increasing number of RC enthusiasts. Bringing a legendary racer to the flying field is, for many, a welcome alternative to the “usual” types of models on the field.

We at Flight-8 were also “bitten by the racer bug”, and, in conjunction with the Vienna firm “Golden Age Productions”, are now producing a giant scale 1:2.8 ARF model of Art Chester’s “The Jeep”! The completed model is an eye-catching crowd-pleaser, both on the ground and in the air, where, just like the full size version, it performs flawlessly! An impressive showplane, its high speed capability coupled with classic good looks guarantees lots of spectator interest. For the experienced pilot, take-offs and landings are absolutely no problem. At any airshow, the “Jeep” pilot will be a welcome guest. The hearts of all Golden Age enthusiasts will beat a little faster when the Chester “The Jeep” shows off its extraordinary talents!

Flight-8`s The Jeep

Construction: “The Jeep” employs classic built-up construction of balsa and plywood. All wooden parts are precision cut, using the most modern CNC technology. Covered with German-manufactured Oracover film, complete with green trim-striping, markings and race number, the kit includes wheels, landing gear, fiberglass cowling and wheelpants, and control-surface linkages. Only the engine, spinner and RC system are not included. Installation of a power-box switch is provided for via a cut-out in the fuselage sidewall.

Powerplant: Flight-8 recommends something a little different for “The Jeep”, an English 4-stroke engine, the RCV 120 which displaces 1.2 cu. in. or 20cc. This engine fits perfectly under the cowling, sounds “right” and guarantees many future scale-like high-speed flights! Other engines can also be used, such as the DLE30 or the DM-26 (see our current catalog).

Art Chester’s "The Jeep": In 1933, airplane designer and air racer Arthur C. Chester brought his new racing plane which he had been building for over a year in his garage) to the National Air Races.

He found immediate success, flying to very respectable 1st and 4th place finishes! Later the same year in Chicago, he won four more races. Only a year later, he showed up with a greatly improved version of that racer, with aerodynamic refinements, smaller wheels, and a one-piece aluminum prop with a perfectly fitting spinner. During the 1934 racing season, this aircraft won eight trophies!

After another winning year in 1935, he registered the now cream-painted airplane with green trim stripes for the 1936 races with the name “The Jeep” lettered on the cowling (taken from the “Popeye” cartoon).

Throughout the Golden Age Racing Era, “The Jeep” was one of the most successful racing aircraft, and competed in nearly every event!
